In India biotechnology started its journey from Animal husbandry, Biofertilizers, Dairy technology, Agricultural field then very soon it proved its growth in area of plant biology, Marine biotechnology, Microbiology, Genetic research, Bio-resource development.
Students having keen interest in biological sciences, having patience to work neatly and accurately in laboratory are suitable for this indiscipline. A prospective biotechnologist should have certain skills in information technology analyzing interpreting skills; other skills that can be helpful for successful and fulfilling career in this area are team spirit and communication skills, analytical proficiency, perseverance, patient and ability to work for long hours. A prospective biotechnologist should have ability to use computers in work.
Subject combination must be biology, chemistry, physics and even mathematics at 10+2 level for the students who want to select Biotechnology as its career option. After 10+2 level many academic institutions are offering various undergraduate programs. Such as BSC, BE, B.tech in biotechnology. Many colleges are having different eligibility criteria some consider over all 10+2 pass percentage i.e. 55% and some taking at least 50% marks in physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics. Not only this, for many undergraduate programs in biotechnology one can apply for common engineering examinations. Various IITs are offering admission through clearing the Joint Entrance Examination for IITs (IITJEE), similarly various National Institutes of Technology or regional colleges offering admission by clearing All-India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). Some more examinations are also occurring in country to provide a good start for students who aspire to study Biotechnology. Such as IP, SREEE, WBJEE, BITSAT, COMET, VITEEE and many more. Not only this, many other engineering institutes conduct their own entrance examinations. Once the criterion met, student can easily get admission in any of the reputed engineering colleges to an undergraduate course in biotechnology.
The specialization is not ending till the undergraduate programs, many universities and colleges have integrated programs in B.tech/M.tech for five or five and half years. Integrated programs got this importance because it is important to get post-graduate qualification in biotechnology. Because post-graduation qualification is must to experience most profits in the ever expanding field of biotechnological applications. After the graduation and post-graduation qualification many foreign universities allowing suitable and technically skilled candidates, to start their research by enrolling to PhD and post-doctoral research programs. Various academic institution and universities offer scholarships to those students who perform extra ordinarily in the entrance exams or the interviews after entrance examination.
These reputed engineering colleges are spread across the country and allowing suitable candidates to join them and facilitated them to show their tremendous work in biotechnology.
So, an early start is advisable to follow biotechnology as a profession. The candidate should have basic knowledge in various branches of science or one should have keen interest to understand scientific applications and have perception for the latest news from the science world. After 10+2 it is must to opt any college or university for the concerned sciences. Although for the successful career one should complete his master degree in biotechnology domain.
